On Thursday afternoon, the Doha-based international media network Al Jazeera announced it was experiencing "systematic and continual hacking attempts." Al Jazeera
reported that its platforms had yet to be compromised, but that the attempts to attack the system are continuing in "various forms."
Since Al Jazeera English's 1:14 PM Tweet that its platforms were under cyber-attack, the account appears to have continued to Tweet its normal content.
Chris Sheridan, a senior White House producer at Al Jazeera English, said that employees are having trouble accessing email and the internet.
Hasan Patel, a senior officer for Al Jazeera's media and public relations department, also confirmed the hacking attempts.
"Last month, Qatar's official
news agency was hacked and false statements attributed to the country's ruler were posted that helped spark a rift with other Arab Gulf states," the Al Jazeera report added. "The fake report said Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in a speech at a military graduation ceremony, was critical of renewed tensions with
Iran, expressed the need for contextualising
Hezbollah and Hamas as resistance movements, and suggested US President
Donald Trump might not last long in power."
CNN has reported that the U.S. government believes Russia
is behind the hack. "Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and several other countries cut their ties with Doha on Monday in part because of the comments briefly posted on the
Qatar News Agency," the Al Jazeera report continued. It also says that an FBI team has been assisting the Qatari government following last month's hack.
